get model to work with xnanimation

how do you get your model to work with this lib ?
I have a fully rigged and animated model in 3D studio max but I just can't get it exported right to work :(
sometimes there is no skeleton, or the bones are magically doubled (and so crossed the limit) or when it does work, the model is totally weird and screwed up...
so, how do you guys export your models ? or is there anything I need to do when skinning/modeling/animating the model ?
plz help !!
