Multiple Animation Controllers?

Quick one. Just running through cleaning up some code and I noticed I am using multiple animation controllers for the same model used for different characters. In my game I need 12 characters all handled with the same skinned model - the one .fbx has all the different animations needed in it for example "walk", "idle" etc. I remember why I created multiple controllers - it was because if I didn't all 'characters' would do the same animation if I didn't.


Is it necessary for me to have 12 different controllers? Or can I use one and still have say character1 doing "walk" and character2 doing "idle" at the same time.
